Vintage Skiing Photo - Snow Valley's Mile Long Chair Lift
© Vintage Winter
High in the sky on Snow Valley's mile long chair lift. This photo was taken in Southern California's winter sports area in the San Bernardino Mountains c. 1949. Snow Valley Ski Area opened up with a rudimentary "sling lift" in 1924 under the name at that time "Fish Camp" due to a fishing pond atop what is now Chair 5. Then in 1937 the mountain was opened up as a commercial ski area by Norwegian ski jumper, Sverre Engen. Arrowhead Springs Hotel took it over in 1938 who later went bankrupt. In 1941 another Norwegian ski jumper, John Elvrum (back from the war as a 10th mountain division veteran) bought the mountain from the forest service on a lease for $5,000 when it received its new name "Snow Valley Ski Resort". All in all a great vintage ski photo that would be a wonderful addition to your ski chalet decor. Available in a variety of finishes.
